Northvale, NJ, January 18, 2012 - Inrad Optics (formerly Photonic Products Group, Inc.),  a leading US-based manufacturer of crystalline materials, glass and metal optical components and value-added photonic devices, announced today that it has been awarded a Phase I contract for $149,955 by the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) of the US Department of Homeland Security to support development of materials for neutron detection.

DNDO is the primary entity in the U.S. government for implementing domestic nuclear detection efforts for a managed and coordinated response to radiological and nuclear threats, and as such is actively working with small businesses on development of novel nuclear radiation detection materials.

The Phase I contract is based on work originally done at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).   Progress on developing the material for commercial neutron detection applications has been faster than expected and extremely encouraging.

Inrad Optics CEO Joseph Rutherford commented on the SBIR award, stating “Inrad Optics’ proven ability to develop and volume manufacture novel crystal products combined with the original science undertaken at LLNL has resulted in a fast track program aimed at helping fill the serious technological gap that exists in nuclear detection materials.  We are thrilled to have been awarded the Phase I contract by DNDO, and are committed to providing the agency with high quality R & D results.”
