Award-winning developments in neutron detection with stilbene crystals
NORTHVALE, NJ, May 6, 2015 – Inrad Optics is pleased to announce it has been selected as a winner of a CLEO/Laser Focus World Innovation Award for its development of stilbene material. The CLEO/Laser Focus World Innovation Awards recognize outstanding companies that have made major contributions to advancing the field of optics and photonics through recently launched products and services.
Crystalline stilbene is an organic scintillator used for radiation detection and is well-suited for discrimination between fast neutrons and a gamma-ray background. A fast neutron is one with kinetic energy above approximately 1 MeV. Fast neutron counting, spectroscopy, and imaging have applications in medicine, industry, research, defense, and homeland security. Inrad Optics produces stilbene using a proprietary low-temperature solution growth technology. This method yields high-quality, low-stress material.
Amy Eskilson, president and CEO, Inrad Optics, said “The 2015 CLEO/Laser Focus World Innovation Award highlights the great work our team is doing to bring stilbene from R&D to commercial production. We are proud that this material may enable next-generation detection systems to better protect the American public against nuclear threats.”
"For fifty years, Laser Focus World has reported on notable advancements in the optoelectronic industry. This year we received a number of potential award-winning submissions presenting significant advances in the field of lasers and electro-optics," said Conard Holton, editor-in-chief, Laser Focus World. "We continue to be amazed by the level of innovative technology advances put forth by award applicants.
