Inrad Optics, a leading producer of custom optics, optical coatings, crystal components, devices and systems has an opportunity for a Process Engineer at its corporate headquarters in Northvale, NJ. This position reports to the Director, Quality and Manufacturing Engineering.

In conjunction with Quality Assurance and Operations Management, this position will establish, maintain and improve quality standards, inspection, testing, recording, and reporting methods. This position will determine, define, and implement test procedures and equipment to assure material and product quality during all stages of manufacture. The engineer will coordinate problem resolution through operations, engineering, sales, purchasing external customers and vendors.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Test and measure optical and dimensional characteristics of optics, crystal components, and metal optics to assure compliance with manufacturing and customer standards
  • Works with cognizant departments to solve quality problems to assure on-time customer delivery
  • Drive process improvements through the use of data and employ quality tools such as Root Cause Analysis, Corrective and Preventative Actions, Process Mapping, Pareto Analysis, FMEA, etc
  • Analyze customer drawings and specifications to identify suitable processes and inspection points to assure compliance with requirements
  • Assure all processes are compliant with standards such as ISO, ITAR and DFAR including conducting internal audits and supporting external audits
  • Develop, document and train employees in QA inspection/testing processes and procedures
  • Manages product returns and interacts with external customers and internal stakeholders on problem resolution
  • Works with sales management for quote, and customer quality related issues.
  • All other reasonable duties, as assigned

Education/Experience/Qualifications:

  • Must be a Citizen of the United States or have a Green Card and authorization to work in the United States
  • Minimum of Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics or related field or Associate of Science with commensurate optical experience
  • Familiarity and competency with standard measurement tools such as calipers, gage blocks, comparators, indicators, etc.
  • Knowledge and competence working with Blueprints and GD&T
  • Ability to work with MS Office suite of products (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, etc)
  • Proficiency in problem solving and critical thinking
  • Desired familiarity of optics, interferometry, ISO quality systems, ITAR regulations
  • Ability to design simple fixtures in SolidWorks a plus

Work Hours:

  • Full time, M-F 8:30AM-5PM
  • Occasional work outside of these hours may be necessary
  • Some travel may be required but <5%

Special Job Requirements:

  • The employee will frequently be required to stand and sit and will also need to stoop, kneel, crouch and lift 20 pounds on occasion. Moderate use of an eye loupe or microscope will also be needed.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to odors, fumes, dust or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. Any aversions or allergies to materials must be divulged
  • Some equipment runs with excessive noise so a comfort level with an industrial setting is preferred
